Winning in the New Era: The Dance of Inflation and Roster Value

As we enter Week 14, the Gotham Great Danes stand undefeated in the loss column, marking an impressive journey through the fantasy basketball season. However, their perfect record is not without a blemish, and credit for that goes to the Van City Grizzlies—the only team to secure a tie against the Danes this season.

The stress and pressure surrounding this undefeated run parallel the intensity experienced during the Golden State Warriors’ historic 73-9 season. Although I’m sure the Danes don’t want that comparison as the warriors came short on a championship that season. The Danes’ pursuit of perfection adds an extra layer of excitement to the fantasy basketball landscape, creating a narrative that keeps fans on the edge of their seats. Will they continue their undefeated streak, or will another team manage to disrupt their quest for dominance? The unfolding weeks promise to bring more excitement and suspense to this remarkable season.

Since securing an impressive 8-1 victory against the Chicago Sunroofers in week 7, the Danes have seen a varied performance trend, notching 4, 6, 4, 5, 6, and 5 category wins in each subsequent weekly matchup. Rucker Park now has its sights set on challenging the Danes, benefitting from historical performances by Luka, who recently scored an outstanding 72 points, and Booker contributing with 60+ points, both showcasing elite shooting.

Analyzing the stats to determine if the Danes can accomplish a mission impossible and flip three categories, it becomes evident that the Busters have a stronghold in 3s, Points, Rebounds, Assists, and Blocks, making it a significant challenge for the Danes. Consequently, the Danes find themselves in damage control mode, attempting to muster up the energy to overturn FG% and steals.

In conclusion, it appears that the Busters are poised to hand the Danes their first loss of the season. Congratulations to the Busters.

Fast Break

  • Danes have won all matchups yet sit tied at first in the standings with Amherst Speedsters, who have lost 2 matchups and tied 2 matchups!
  • The playoff race is currently between two teams, with 17ers only 1 game outside of the 8th spot. The 10th place Chicago and 11th place Syracuse both had sell-offs; more on that later…
  • Danes have 3 players in the top 10 on the season; that is already 30% of their total cap, not factoring in current play prices and other players’ inflation. It’s Win or Bust; another 2nd place finish would demoralize the fanbase.
  • Busters have 2 players in the top 10 and three players in the 10-24 range. Those players alone yield a whopping 44% inflation, not counting all the other players bringing in strong value on the season. This team feels the urgency to win yesterday!
  • Speedsters surprisingly have no players in the top 10 on the season, a pair of players in the 10-24 range; player inflation bill may be reasonable; fair to say this team is frugal!
  • Titanes have 2 people in the top 10 and another at rank 18; will have to open the pocketbook or look to relocate. Having Wiseman on the roster is not it; poverty franchise moves.
  • Phoeniks is all hype with only Jokic inside the top 10; the next closest members are in the 30s. This team has work to do if they are to be taken seriously as a contender. Is it Lucky 8 again this season?
  • Van City is crafty, with no players inside the top 24 but many in the middling rank. Will this strategy prosper? Highly doubtful; you need at least one superstar, and it can’t be “White Man Can’t Jump.”
  • 17ers are all hype, an underwhelming season after management went into the tax to run it back with the addition of Steph Curry. Even Curry has struggled to whip this team into a contender.
  • The Kranston Killers are sneaky and could make some noise, but Jayson Tatum will need to step up if they are going to realize their potential. The team can’t be taken seriously with Jonny Davis still rostered.
  • The NY Knickerbockers secured their first win against the busters in Week 9, prevailing 5-4. NYK has two matchup wins on the season, both against playoff teams—the Busters and the Bombers.
  • NYK is in danger of pulling a Toronto. Fred VanVleet (FVV) is currently ranked 14th and is likely headed for free agency, leaving NYK with no compensation in return.
  • Shai is the #1 player in fantasy, poised for another lucrative play next season, and being held hostage by the King Landing Kings. The closest-ranked player to Shai is Bam, currently at #76. One has to wonder if Shai becomes fed up and asks for a trade!
  • Solid State is in a weak state, peddling in mediocrity, with only two players in the top 50: Sabonis and Porzingis. “Damm Homie, a couple of years ago, you were the man, homie…”
  • Moneyman is doing his best to evade taxes and give Giannis exactly what he needs to rot in his prime. Is this a joke? The next best player on the roster is ex-teammate Jrue Holiday, ranked at 66; a firing is imminent.
  • Sparrows did it right, trading anyone within the top 100 except Sengun—great for the wallet, awful for the fans. Walking a thin line between players just being who they are and actually awful or taking a leap next year. The overall plan is probably that some of these moneybag teams won’t retain their expensive top talent. Either way, there’s plenty of young promising talent—will the stars align? We’ll see.
  • SBE has 4 INJ players, providing more evidence that the 5-4 strategy is a pipe dream in association.

Trade Season Unleashed

Trade – exchange for something else
Negotiation- discussion aimed at reaching an agreements

Inaugural Trade of 2024

Van City displayed the vision to recognize that Quickley would be a star in the making. NYK allegiance started and ended with the Knicks. Quickley is priced at $17 (Current Rank 103), compared to Murphy who is at $37 (Current Rank 137).

The most concerning aspect of this trade is that Murphy, who many, including myself, would consider a bust so far this season, has missed a larger part of the season, and his numbers are nothing to be excited about. Yet, he is still ranked fairly high and approaching inflation territory. It is conceivable that NYK envisioned a scenario where Murphy’s value would see little salary inflation for the next season as they look to rebuild and re-energize the franchise. However, if Murphy puts together a good second half of the season, that plan could be foiled, and a more significant decision awaits them in the offseason.

On the other hand, Quickley will almost surely get his pay increase next season, both in real life and in fantasy, and is at least getting the opportunity to shape and lead the Raptors. I grade Van City’s move as a TKO within the first seconds! (Winning Move here)

Dame Refuses to Play for Syracuse:

Damian Lillard has been adamant about wanting a trade since the start of the 2023-24 season, and his trade request was finally honored as he joins the Busters! In exchange for the star player, Syracuse received undrafted rookie pickup Jaime Jaquez Jr. at $1, who is currently ranked 13, while Lillard is at $156 and ranked 122.

The Busters, already in the tax, essentially paid $16 to bring Dame to Rucker Park. This strategic move aligns with their urgency to win now. The package Syracuse received seems borderline laughable, combining elements of both the last laugh and skepticism. While Jaquez’s trajectory is uncertain, he has shown promise so far in the Heat culture. However, this is Dame we’re talking about. It raises questions about the value received—perhaps some rookies, draft picks, or a move similar to the Trailblazers bringing in DominAyton could have been explored.

In this transaction, the Busters capitalized on Sparrows slipping and managed to delivered a bruising blow in the 5th round!

Tyus Leaves the Nonsense in Syracuse:

Tyus Jones, showcasing impressive early-season play, captured the Speedsters’ attention. They successfully acquired Tyus ($35) in exchange for the less impactful asset Fultz ($4). Sparrows, recognizing the urgency to trade Tyus, executed the deal as he is currently ranked 36 and has no future with a team bound for the Lottery and rebuilding.

However, the move to acquire often-injured Fultz poses a significant challenge for the Syracuse medical staff. The vision of Syracuse seems a bit foggy, and while the popcorn is close by, the rest of the movie remains uncertain. In this trade, the Speedsters emerge as a resounding winner.

Better than a Tie, a Win-Win Trade:

In a recent trade, Karl-Anthony Towns (KAT) valued at $88, currently ranked 32, was swapped for Jaylen Brown ($40), who is ranked 59. The Busters, displaying an active approach following the new year, added another win-now piece to their roster. On the other side, Chicago, deciding that the time is not now, secured a cheaper asset in Brown, saving at least $48 plus the potential inflation costs to retain JB for the following season.

This trade is shaping up to be better than a tie; it’s a win-win scenario for both teams.

Great Danes Commits a Heist:

In a recent move, the Great Danes managed to retain Nikola Vucevic, who is currently ranked 44, in exchange for Andrew Wiggins and their 2024 rookie draft pick, which falls between 14, 15, or 16. This trade has left the Danes smiling, akin to the picture above, as Vucevic provides them with added depth and flexibility for an already stacked team.

On the other side, Chicago appears to have made a misstep by trading Vucevic, who was on a respectable contract, even considering future player inflation, for what seems like free stuff. The grade Danes received for this trade is comparable to the curve set out on the last Trash and Recycling day—a clear win for the Great Danes.

NBA GM’s Perspective on the Association

“Its not the same league it was a year ago…. the landscape has changed”

– Unnamed

This is a fact! The overwhelming number of winners on the buyer’s side is evident. Starting with an expensive roster becomes a potential negative asset for two main reasons: A) finding a team willing to pay the luxury tax to acquire such assets, and B) finding a team willing to include a young, cheaper asset or a rookie pick in the deal.

“Folks don’t understand the implications of the new CBA creating awkward conversations and trade negotiations far apart”

Unnamed

This is indeed the prevailing climate. The new CBA incentivizes proactive owners and underscores the importance of safeguarding cheap assets unless a godfather offer presents itself. Consider this perspective: most owners have already spent 100% of the cap for the current season. When factoring in total inflation for a team, typically consisting of 12 players, the aim is to retain players returning top 100 value, unless, of course, a player is injured or in a situation that points toward a brighter future next year. Assuming a modest 2% inflation for each player to be kept, this constitutes 24% of your cap just to retain players, and this does not even include the absolute value or cost of the player to begin with! For instance, teams like the Busters or Danes possess an incredible amount of talent, for which they may end up paying more than 4, possibly 10 times the league fee to retain, once agreed-upon terms of the repeater tax are established

“Top 3 fav, killing the top seed this week. Danes always chokes in the playoffs”

Titanes

The first statement is inaccurate; Titanes currently stands at the sixth position in the standings, resembling more the LA Lakers’ situation. In the contender conversation, Titanes is considered irrelevant.

The assertion that the Danes always choke in the playoffs is subjective and based on opinion. While the last three seasons haven’t been favorable for the Danes, it’s worth noting that they are still tied for the most championships in the association. Despite recent struggles, the Danes have a history of success, and perhaps they channel their inner king when it matters most in the finals.
